Happy Birthday, Utah.

Morning Friends & Neighbors,

Today I woke to a beautiful morning.
Woke to a city desperately ready for summer.
I woke to a wonderful feeling on Utah Phillips’ birthday.

Utah has always been one of the few individuals I sincerely consider an idol. Someone truly worthy of that title. Someone who, hands down, was (and still is) the embodiment of everything I believe in, feel and love.

Like my anarchistic Grandfather, he taught me what real American pride was. Not a yellow ribbon on a truck bumper, not some pop-country song about kicking ass and taking names, but a somber pride that swells and flows from our families, our Unions, our fights and our victories.

I remember on one of the albums he did with Ani Difranco, he asked, “why it was that kids didn’t have real heroes anymore?” And I find that to be a question we should still be asking. But more importantly, I think we should ask ourselves who is it that we are idolizing?0 Who are our heroes? Who do we want to be when you grow up. And why?

So, on this beautiful morning, here’s to my hero who, even after death, continues to illuminate the undefinable fact that the past didn’t go anywhere.

It’s always here. Beside us. Helping us through.

Trust & Solidarity

Dalice Malice
